PROF. OTTAVIO ALFIERI
Prof. Ottavio Alfieri was, from 1996 to 2017, Director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Unit of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
Member of the Editorial Board of several scientific journals, he is also author and/or co-author of more than 600 articles “peer-reviewed” related to many areas of cardiac surgery and cardiology. His main interest is surgery for valve heart diseases, especially the mitral valve repair. He developed several patents mainly related to treatment of heart valve disease and, in the early 90s, he also developed the Edge-to-Edge technique, a method of the mitral valve repair, which is the basis of the currently most used type of percutaneous correction of mitral regurgitation. He has actively promoted a multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of heart diseases and, with the valuable contribution of its employees, as well as national and international cooperation in both academic and industrial fields, has developed important therapeutic innovations revenue in clinical practice.
Over the years, he has established an infrastructure with staff dedicated to the collection of clinical data and the coordination of research activities, editing many scientific reports in international journals.
In 2011 served as President of the European Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) and in 2018 received the Gold Medal from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
He is currently a member of the ESC, EACTS, AATS, STS.
Today, Prof. Alfieri is Chairman of the Alfieri Heart Foundation, headquartered at the San Raffaele Hospital, created for supporting and implementing innovation, research and education.
